Requirements: a psychotherapeutic diagnosis of clinical relevance (made by your therapist) plus a medical examination before the 2nd session that rules out physical causes (GP, psychiatrist, etc.). The first 10 sessions need no approval, from the 11th onwards they do.

Frequently asked

Do I get the subsidy without a diagnosis?
No. Insurers only refund for a mental disorder of clinical relevance (ICD-10). Pure life coaching is not covered.
Who makes the diagnosis and do I need to see a doctor?
Your therapist makes the psychotherapeutic diagnosis. In addition, a medical examination is required before the 2nd session to rule out physical causes; the doctor (GP, psychiatrist, etc.) only confirms that treatment is needed, they do not make the psychotherapeutic diagnosis.
How much does my insurance refund per session?
ÖGK 33.70 €, BVAEB 50.20 €, SVS 50.00 €, KFA around 39.00 € per individual session (as of 2026).
What is my out-of-pocket share per session?
At around 110 € per session, roughly 60 to 76 € depending on your insurer. Social rates lower it further.
Do I need approval for every session?
No. The first 10 sessions need no approval; from the 11th onwards you do.
